The Listening Project

In April 2022  , we were delighted to find out that our bid to the National Lottery’s “People and Places” was successful.  This means that The Listening Project will be able to continue for a further three years to develop services for older people in our community as well as keeping what is already in place.  We can’t thank the National Lottery and the players enough for enabling this to happen.

What is The Listening Project?

The Listening Project is a befriending one for older people in the Lower Cynon Valley.  We also cook and deliver a weekly hot meal, provide telephone and face to face befriending and activities identified by the older people themselves.  We provide food boxes to whoever needs one and a community food table and fridge.

We deliver a range of activities which have been identified by the older people as what they would like or need and these include Bingo, afternoon tea parties with entertainment and an arts and crafts group.

Welcome Wednesday

As part of the Project we also delivery Welcome Wednesday, this takes place weekly between 10 and 12 with energy and other advice sessions, a tombola, stalls and students from Maesgwyn School offer free manicures, hand massages and hair styling during term time.  Our fantastic Food Pantry is also open as part of Welcome Wednesday, so the session really offers full support to those that need it.  Of course our community based cafe, Taffy’s Café is open too and there is a 10% discount on our delicious meals for over 60s.   Accessibility has been identified as an issue so we also offer lifts to and from the Feel Good Factory so that less mobile people can fully participate in all our events.

Getting involved.

Volunteering is an essential element of the Listening Project.  Our community has the will and the skills to support each other in a sustainable way and in the past year we have recruited over 30 volunteers, many of whom are older people themselves, who work with us to ensure that our older people receive the best possible service.  We are always looking for volunteers so please get in touch if you would be interested in joining our friendly team.

Or if you are an older person who would like some befriending support from our lovely volunteers, a hot meal delivered to your door or if you wish to be involved in our community activities, please contact Nina on 01443 475120 / 07719621997
nina@bryncynonstrategy.org.uk  We would love to hear from you.
