The Listening Project
In April 2022, we were thrilled to learn that our application to the National Lottery’s “People and Places” program was approved. This funding allows The Listening Project to continue for an additional three years, enabling us to enhance services for older individuals in our community while maintaining existing offerings. We are incredibly grateful to the National Lottery and its players for making this possible.
What is The Listening Project?
The Listening Project provides befriending services for older residents in the Lower Cynon Valley. We also prepare and deliver a weekly hot meal, offer both telephone and in-person befriending, and organize activities that our older participants express interest in. Additionally, we provide food boxes for those in need, along with a community food table and fridge.
We host a variety of activities that older people have requested, including Bingo, afternoon tea parties with entertainment, and an arts and crafts group.
Welcome Wednesday
As part of the Project, we run Welcome Wednesday every week from 10 AM to 12 PM. This event features energy and advice sessions, a tombola, various stalls, and students from Maesgwyn School offering free manicures, hand massages, and hair styling during term time.
Our fantastic Food Pantry is also open during Welcome Wednesday, providing comprehensive support for those who need it. We recognise that accessibility is a concern, so where possible we provide lifts to and from the Feel Good Factory to ensure that individuals with mobility challenges can fully participate in our events.
Getting Involved
Volunteering is a vital part of The Listening Project. Our community is eager and capable of supporting one another sustainably. Over the past year, we’ve welcomed more than 40 volunteers, many of whom are older individuals themselves, who help us ensure that our older participants receive top-notch services. We are always on the lookout for more volunteers, so please reach out if you’re interested in joining our friendly team.
If you are an older person seeking befriending support from our wonderful volunteers, would like a hot meal delivered to your door, or wish to participate in our community activities, please contact Nina at 01443 475120 / 07719621997 or via email at nina@bryncynonstrategy.org.uk. We would love to hear from you!
